Active Women Arise Africa (AWA-AFRICA) walks alongside women, children, and youth in South Sudan’s most conflict-affected and hard-to-reach communities, combining protection, education, livelihoods, and peacebuilding into one continuous, locally-led model.

What We Do
In South Sudan’s hardest-hit counties, Unity, Upper Nile, Jonglei, and the Equatorias, more than a decade of conflict and displacement has left women and children without reliable access to protection, healthcare, education, or livelihoods. Gender-based violence, early marriage, and economic exclusion fall hardest on women and girls, and the services that should reach them remain thin on the ground.

We believe dignity, protection, and opportunity shouldn’t depend on how remote a community is. That’s why we built a model around four connected pillars, delivered together rather than as four separate programmes:

About Us

AWA-AFRICA was founded in 2019 by South Sudanese women, youth, and community leaders, after carrying out their own assessment of what conflict-affected communities actually needed. We hold both emergency response and long-term development in one model, support doesn’t stop once the immediate crisis passes.

    We work with the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, local government authorities, traditional and religious leaders, and the network of youth, women’s groups, and community volunteers who sustain our field presence. We are actively building deeper partnerships with UN agencies, international NGOs, legal advocates for widows’ rights, and corporate CSR programmes as we scale.
